The Product Engineering organization is at the core of the mission, supporting the growth and member experience with our backend systems, APIs, and services. We own the mission critical edge and mid-tier services and operate them at tremendous scale - handling hundreds of millions of accounts, billions of profiles, tens of millions of requests per second. Hundreds of microservices at Netflix rely on our APIs and systems to deliver joy to our members. Netflix Games We love games, whether it's physical games (Floor is Lava), mind games (The Circle), or Squid Game. We are excited to be taking our passion to the next level by launching Netflix games! Product Engineering systems are critical to the success of our gaming initiatives. We are responsible for much of the infrastructure needed to deliver a seamless gaming experience to our members, and to provide a great game developer experience, including APIs for discovery & gamer interaction, SDK integration, identity & access management, user messaging & support, and more. The Opportunities With the continued evolution of Streaming Video and the advent of Gaming, our Product Engineering team is expanding and we are looking for several Senior Distributed Systems Engineers to help design, develop and evolve systems to support our product initiatives. You will help the team expand its scope from streaming to the gaming domain and beyond. You will work closely with world-class software engineers, data engineers and product managers to help define the future of the systems and architecture. You will build systems to grapple with Netflix's ever-growing scale, and work on some of the most critical and highest volume services. Each of these opportunities will allow you to deliver tremendous impact by solving problems that span broad and diverse domains across Netflix. API Systems:
We also curate and aggregate the core Discovery API that powers the Netflix experience across all devices. As we expand into games, we will evolve the Games discovery and social experience on the Netflix App and help create new API experiences for our Games Platform consumed by game developers. Product Access Management:
Come for the scale, stay for the innovation! Product Access Management systems enable secure access to Netflix users and devices for games, streaming and TUDUM. PAM has two teams - PEAS (Product Edge Access Systems) responsible for user/device authentication and authorization solutions, and DIS (Device Identity Systems) supporting seamless device access experiences with device identity and context systems, user/device relationships and device history. Account & Security Experiences:
The ASX (Account & Security Experiences) team is responsible for building secure user journeys involving customer & device identity. We are the glue that provides complex integrations between user identity backend systems and security services that enable our UI partners to deliver exceptional user experiences to our members. Playback & Game Lifecycle API:
Whenever anyone launches Netflix and chooses to watch a title or play a game, the playing experience is made possible by dozens of APIs. The Playback & Game Lifecycle (PGL) team builds and operates scalable infrastructure to deliver the video and game functionality (APIs) to billions of devices. We handle tremendous scale (millions of requests per second & we process many TBs of data daily). We also operate some of the most critical services at Netflix (If we are down, Netflix is down!) Playback at Netflix is all about an amazing entertainment experience. The Playback & Game Experience team owns the systems responsible for enabling the best possible streaming and gaming experience for our members. What you stream is optimized for your watching preferences, your device capabilities, and the best resolutions available to you. The gaming experience is a wholly new space to explore what we can provide to give Netflix Gamers an amazing game play experience. These systems are critical to the Netflix product scaling to support billions of devices and global demand. About You You are a skilled backend engineer, with significant experience architecting, building and operating fault-tolerant distributed systems at massive scale. You are an empathetic partner, leading cross-functional initiatives and collaborating with engineers, product managers and Technical Project Managers across multiple teams. You are an expert in Java and/or other object-oriented programming languages, and are well-versed in various RPC technologies, including REST, gRPC and GraphQL. Ideally, you have experience managing large data sets, building API gateways, implementing access and identity management solutions, or have experience delivering backend systems that enable mobile and cloud gaming features. What You Can Expect If you join the Netflix Engineering organization to work on backend streaming and gaming technology, you can expect to have impact immediately, for example, you will deploy code to production within your first few weeks! Generally, you can expect the following in your first year with the team:
1 month You will spend time getting familiar with Netflix culture, the team, technology and terminology, meeting with team and partners, and learning about what they do. This will help you build the picture of how your work directly impacts Netflix. You will commit something into production. 3 months You will get great at building, operating, and maintaining critical microservices in distributed systems that are reliable, performant and easy to operate at scale. You will work across all phases of the software development lifecycle to design high-scale fault tolerant distributed systems. You will contribute to the quarterly roadmap (built by engineers) and retrospectives, and take on-call rotation responsibilities. You will use your adaptability and remote-inclusive skills to enjoy learning and growing with your team and partners. 6 months You will lean into risk to innovate rapidly to scale and support the delivery of new, highly impactful features for key user experiences, design meaningful and intuitive APIs, and flexible and scalable data models. You will start contributing to the long-term roadmap for the team and the org. 12 months You will use your knowledge and creativity to champion and lead new initiatives and improvements for the team, group and organization.
Salary Range:
$80K -- $100K
Minimum Qualification
Systems Architecture & Engineering, Software DevelopmentEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
